How Brick Walls Are Made

Brick is one of the most enduring building materials. Despite being in use for over five thousand years, it has managed to retain its charm and functionality. Today, it is useful for many purposes, one of such is building walls. Brick walls have a simple and classic appearance that complements the surroundings. However, making this wall is a technical work usually requiring a bricklayer. This doesn’t mean you can’t do some bit of it yourself, especially the small tasks. In this piece, we highlight the major steps of how you build your wall yourself.

Stage 1 – Prepare the Wall

Get the right bricks. Depending on where you’re erecting the wall, you can use severe weathering, medium weathering, and no weathering bricks

Make sure the size and shape of the bricks you get will do the job. Factor in the space that the mortar will take.

Dig a long rectangular trench as the foundation. You need a footer made of concrete. The depth will be determined by the height of your wall and the load-carrying capacity of the soil.

Affix wooden stakes that are the height of the bricks and mortar space into the soil, all at the same level. The stakes should have about 2-4 feet gap between them. Once this is done, leave out space for your bricks and layer the trench with concrete.

Allow the concrete to dry for a few days.

Fix gauging rods to ensure walls are level.

Stage 2 – Building The First Row

Get the equipment. This includes a trowel, hammer, and chisel for cutting the bricks, string line, brick jointer, etc.

You can place the tarp or plywood at the base of the wall.

Use a string line attached to the guideposts at the ends of the wall to ensure your work is straight.

Mix the mortar, a combination of sand and cement. You can also add a plasticizer.

Soak the bricks in water and let drip dry. Their wetness will allow the mortar bonds to form correctly.

Lay mortar along the base of the foundation and place your bricks on it. Press the bricks down with a little force and ensure it is level and straight with the string line.

Always scrape off excess mortar.

When laying the next brick on the row, coat its end that will attach to the previous brick with mortar before pressing it into place.

Always ensure the bricks are evenly laid by using your tape measure and the line.

Stage 3 – Adding New Rows

Stagger your bricks. This means a brick on the next row sits on two bricks in the row below it. Doing this means starting every other new row with half a brick on both sides.

Build the ends of the wall up a course higher than you’re working on, this will help you stay level while you lay the bottom row bricks.

From here, all you have to do is repeat the process.

Stage 4 – Finishing Touches

Once at the top, you can finish off in unique styles to compliment your work

Fill the gaps in the wall with mortar

When the mortar has hardened a little, run a brick jointer along the joints, and use a brush for the wall to smoothen it.

Protect your wall by covering it on the first night.

How To Save Up For A Concrete Project

Before diving into the concrete project for a home you need to plan the project thoroughly including the margin of errors. We can help you with saving up for such a project.

Your expenditure depends on the thing you want to build, whether it’s a driveway, a patio, or a garage. You need to estimate the entire cost of the project to have a confirmed amount in numbers. The estimation will include concrete price, labor wages, preparation of the site, the design of concrete you want to have. Remember to include all kinds of expenditure in the estimation to have the right calculations. It can leave a big dent in your savings if the numbers are wrong.

Once you have the estimation, you need to save this amount without going through a lot of trouble. You rather need smart savings. Divide the amount on the number of months you require to save that kind of money. The result of the division is the monthly amount you need to save for a concrete project.

You can save the money in a separate place or have a bank account dedicated to the concrete project. This way you won’t be able to spend it for day to day things. It will be saved away until the targeted amount is achieved.

In order to manage savings for such a project, it is advised that you limit your expenses until the target amount is saved. How should you limit your expenses? Is the big question here? You cut your expenses on excessive hangouts limiting them to once in two weeks (well you need to keep your sanity as well, one per month may cost you, your sanity). May be cut on buying junk food every weekend, instead prepare food at home.

It’s time to take out the stuff not needed for the garage sale/backyard sale.

Lose the expensive services of the internet and replace them with the ones having fewer services to offer, only until the money is saved up.

Search for the skills that you can learn and perform to save labor.  You can also go for a low price concrete design style with equally best results. Having a well-timed duration to finish the project can also help you in spending a lower amount as it will require less labor.

Learn the skills of effective conversation. It will help you to bargain with the construction workers having a balanced expenditure on the project.

Take your time with the project making sure how you want your concrete project to be made. Marginalize your imagination about the project, because oftentimes things don’t turn out exactly the way we want. So it’s important for you to do your homework about concrete work before jumping into it.

By taking these measures you can save up money in a planned manner removing any chance of dent in your savings or earnings. From time to time you can cheat very slightly with the savings. (we both know you will).
